Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield
Springfield, MO

The Ray House is one of my favorite stops along the self-guided tour of the battlefield. The home was turned into a field hospital following the battle. You can walk through the house today and see the bed where they laid the dying General Lyon. Fascinating stuff!

There’s just something about stumbling across a quiet little cemetery tucked back in the trees. Most of these graves pre-dated the Civil War.

I love it that my husband shares my love for history. Here he was trying to help me make out the names and dates carved in stone.

This cabin was used for general Headquarters during the battle. I’d love to sit on its porch and write in my book every day!

Looking out from “Bloody Hill”, where the battle ended fiercely.
